Nuclear waste in South Carolina causing financial headache for federal government
South Carolina is home to the Savannah River Site, a facility which was used by the US government for the production of tritium and plutonium for use in nuclear weapons. In 2008 the U.S. Department of energy and the Site signed a contract for nuclear waste to be cleared, it was expected to cost $3.2 billion, but will, now cost over $4.6 billion.
From the 1950’s tritium and plutonium was used to produce component for the Department of Defense’s production of nuclear weapons, primarily producing tritium and plutonium. The nature of producing these substances meant that considerable waste by-produce was created, 37 million gallons of liquid waste to be exact. Read more
